Frost Shield Kit

Manhole Freeze Protection and Insulation for Cold-Climate Infrastructure
The Pro-Line Frost Shield Kit is a manhole insulation system designed to reduce frost penetration and protect valves and underground assets in cold climates. Installed within the structure, it acts as a dedicated insulation barrier that helps protect critical components from freezing.
The system helps protect gate valves, air release valves, and related components in freeze-prone regions.
Quick Specs
- Insulation: Expanded polystyrene, R-value 15, 4 in thick
- Fits through: Standard 20 in frame and cover
- Primary use: Manholes and catch basins
- Function: Freeze protection insulation
- Load rating: Not load bearing
- Installation: Internal, supported by anchored blocks
- Use case: Retrofit and new installations
Overview
The Frost Shield Kit is engineered for retrofit or new installations and installs inside a manhole or catch basin to reduce frost entry and provide freeze protection.
Each kit is supplied with support blocks and concrete anchors for secure installation at the specified elevation inside the structure.
The Frost Shield is intended for insulation purposes only and is not load bearing.
Designed for Retrofit Applications
The Frost Shield is designed to fit through a standard 20 in frame and cover, allowing installation in existing structures without major modification. This makes it suitable for retrofit projects where added freeze protection is required.
Key Features
- Lightweight construction for easier handling and installation
- Corrosion resistant components suited for buried infrastructure
- Expanded polystyrene insulation with R-value 15
- Configurations and logo printing available
- Engineered for use in municipal underground infrastructure
- Installation using supplied hardware

- Gate valve chambers
- Air release valve chambers
- Cold-climate retrofit projects
Construction and Materials
The Frost Shield Kit uses durable and insulating materials selected for buried and high-moisture environments.
Standard components include:
- Expanded polystyrene insulation, R-value 15, 4 in thick
- Aluminum composite panels
- Thick-walled PVC support blocks
- Galvanized chest handles
- Stainless steel bolts and hardware
- Concrete wedge anchors
This combination provides an effective insulation layer while maintaining durability in wet and corrosive conditions.
Sizes and Configurations
Frost Shields are sized to match common manhole barrel diameters and are available in multiple configurations.
Round Sizes
- 24 in
- 30 in
- 36 in
- 48 in
- 60 in
Square Sizes
Square configurations are available for applicable structures.
Support block counts and anchor quantities vary by size to ensure proper support and secure installation.
Custom configurations and printed branding are available upon request.
Installation Summary
Installation is performed inside the manhole or catch basin at the selected elevation.
General process:
- Determine elevation and mark a level line around the barrel
- Use support blocks as drilling templates
- Drill 1/4 in holes to a minimum depth of 1-3/4 in into the concrete
- Insert anchors through support blocks and set them
- Tighten anchors to approximately 4 ft-lbs of torque
- Install the Frost Shield so the seam rests on the support blocks
